My Monstera.
Sadly Overlooked, Misunderstood and Possibly Lonely.
But I still love you and I'm willing to learn!!
I've had my Monstera for about four years. I've moved it around from place to place. I've left it at home in the sunroom. I've left it in my studio. I got my Monstera from a plant sale on campus, several years ago. It's the first one I've owned. I really love the idea of this plant but I've really never figured it out, or looked into how to best care for it. But it has survived and for that I am grateful. This site is an homage to it's resilience and my way of saying:"I see you."
Things I don't know but should learn about finally
- how much water it likes
- how much sun it likes
- how warm is too warm and how cool is too cool—temperature-wise
- what kind of music it likes
- if it would enjoy being spoken to
- if it is happy in its current location
What I could do to address the list of things I don't know
- research
- name it, rather than just refer to it as "it" to personalize it and maybe create more incentive to learn about it
- read up on the Monstera
- talk to people I know about what they think
- visit a greenhouse
- try various approaches and use a journal to note and changes and/or observations
- other ideas here...
A short history of my Monstera
A while ago, maybe 4–5 years ago, a greenhouse near me held a plant sale. Assuming that a Greenhouse would be a decent place to buy a plant from (as oppose to a place like Walmart) I wandered over to the sale to look around.
That is where I found my Monstera. It was a small clipping off of a larger one, resting in an unassuming black plastic pot
very similar to the one pictured here.
I don't know any specifics about where it came from, other that what I've already mentioned. I don't know whether the original "parent" provided any other clippings (possible siblings). To date, it has shown no signs of preference in terms of location. It seems to grow very slowly, which runs counter to what I was told about it, and thus, one of the main purposes of this website.
Things I could do to improve it's quality of life
- transplant into newer fresher soil
- surround with other plants
- dust its leaves
- keep this fan page maintained and perhaps read parts outloud in its presence.
